Mission
The World History
Resource Center provides a comprehensive program in professional development
for teachers of world history. Its library, workshops, and teaching materials
emphasize broad themes and interconnections in world history. The programs
of the Resource Center urge teachers to stay in contact with exciting
new research results and scholarly debates, but also emphasize practical,
hands-on activities that will enable students to stay involved and build
their confidence in interpreting world history.
Background
The World History Center came into existence in 1994, in association with
the opening of the doctoral program in World History at Northeastern University.
From the first, the objective was to link research and teaching in world
history, for the benefit of each. In 1998, professional development work
became a high priority of the World History Center. Along with an active
program of teacher workshops, the World History Resource Center and its
library were created in June 1998, initially in 276 Holmes Hall, then
moving in September 1999 to its present location in 071 Lake Hall. With
time the relationship between the World History Center and the Resource
Center have evolved, so that the World History Center focuses on research,
doctoral studies and multimedia production, while the Resource Center
emphasizes professional development, curriculum development, and preparation
of new teachers.
