World History is not just about dates and facts. It is about providing students with ways to understand the complexity of the world around them, to appreciate its diversity, and to inspire critical thinking. This Institute will provide teachers with strategies to make such connections, as it focuses on six key themes: communities, developments of nation-states or empires, economics and trade, belief systems, conflict, and stability and change. This Institute builds upon the Centerıs work in Grades 9 and 10 courses in world history to develop a coherent two year world history course from 500 to the present, that is the material that is taught in Grades 9 and 10 courses in the Massachusetts Framework for History and Social Science.

Each days session focuses on one of three periods: 500-1500, 1500-1800, and 1800-the Present; a theme or themes in world history; and representative regions through which to investigate these periods and themes. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with scholars in world history through thematic lectures and discussions which focus on the specific content. Experienced teachers will present lessons and strategies. Special emphasis is given to the use resources to engage all learners including primary source material, art, literature and music, as well as multimedia materials. Participants will meet for a follow-up session in January 2001 to share the resources they developed.

In order to work with this new material in new ways, participants will each prepare and implement a lesson, will work collaboratively to assess their work. They will also join in follow-up activities. Participants will be have special access to the World History Resource Center which has many materials of interest to educators.
