Ph.D. Program in World History The Northeastern University Ph.D. program in History grants degrees in World History. The program, which accepted its first students in 1994, is a comprehensive program of study ending with a dissertation on a global topic. The program emphasizes strong methodological and area-studies training, but gives particular emphasis to research and interpretation relying on comparisons and connections going beyond a given region. The close association between the doctoral program and the World History Center enables students to gain experience in research projects, multimedia design and production, and curriculum development in world history. The program accepts an average of five new students per year. Students are expected to take three years of courses. They are to select an advisor in their first year, and a full committee of three faculty members soon thereafter. At the end of their third year they may be ready to gain approval of their dissertation proposal and take their comprehensive exams. All students take one general exam on world history, based on a common reading list, and two other exams on regional or thematic emphases.
