The MA general program in History at Northeastern is a two-year program of study requiring 43 quarter hours of study or fourteen courses. Students may focus on World History in this program study, and will find that most of their courses emphasize global connections in various fashions. In addition to the required Historical Methodology course, students are to take a range of courses, one or two research seminars, and have the option of completing the degree through a thesis or a comprehensive exam. Courses and research seminars enable a focus on world history. This degree may be applied to many further pursuits, including teaching. An exam or separate program of certification will lead to MA plus Certification. The MAT degree in History is a two-year program of study, with course requirements both in History and in Education. Students focusing in World History take the required methodology course, an Approaches to World History course, a research seminar, and a range of other courses. Internships in the World History Resource Center give students strength in using and preparing new curriculum. With an additional summer of study, students will qualify for provisional certification as teachers. Those completing the program receive a World History Teaching Certificate in addition to their degree. As fully trained teachers of World History, these graduates will be an important resource in the schools. Beginning 2003 with the change to a semester calendar at the university, a five-year BA/MAT program in World History is expected to be implemented. This will include substantial World History training and Resource Center internship in the junior year, student teaching in the senior year, and concludes with a graduate year of intensive study in history and pedagogy. For further information on these two programs, see the History Department
