ANIMATED VERSION OF THE SIMULATION The animation below summarizes the simulation for a 40-year period, based on three sets of assumptions. In each case, the top age pyramid is the African Source population, the middle pyramid is African Slave Society (the Captors plus the slaves they retain), and the bottom pyramid is the Slave population overseas (note that the latter group is magnified in size). As the animation proceeds through forty years of slave trade and migration, you will see the changing size of each population. Version 1 presents the estimated rates of birth, death, and migration for the eighteenth-century Atlantic slave trade on average. Version 2 assumes a higher death rate among captives and thus a smaller overseas slave population. Version 3 assumes a lower rate of enslavement and migration for females. You may wish to compare these population pyramids with each other and with those resulting from the output of the full simulation. |
